Agarwood (Gaharu in Malay) is a resin embedded wood produced by large evergreens tropical Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees when they get injured or infected with a type of mould.  Literally, it’s called “sinking incense”, alluding to its high density and aroma.

The agarwood tree body is a treasure trove. Its aromatic resin is an important ingredient for expensive perfumes and medicines and the leaves can be made into tea. The overall value can exceed gold and it’s often called “the diamond of plants”. Its usefulness and high demand have been the cause of rampant logging, resulting in near extinction in the wild. Currently it has become a protected endangered species.
